LEST WE FORGET 93 CHAPLIN, Arthur Horace “Art” WWII Art was born in Lockwood, Saskatchewan, in September 1919. He enlisted in World War II with the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 and spent three years overseas as a Ground Mechanic. He was an active member of The Royal Canadian Legion. He designed the Cenotaph and helped build the Legion Hall in his hometown. Art passed away in December 1981. CHOWN, Ernest “Ernie” WWII Ernie was born on November 21, 1920, in Moosomin, Saskatchewan and moved to Elkhorn with his parents at a young age. He received his education in Elkhorn. He enlisted in the Army and joined the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps on March 12, 1942. He served in Halifax and Vancouver during World War II and was discharged as a Sergeant on May 6, 1946. Ernie passed away on April 19, 1990. CHARTRAND, Charles William WWI Charles William Chartrand was born at sea on July 10, 1886. His service record does not indicate the country he emigrated from. His sister Mathilda Shean, named as his next of kin, lived in Cobden, Ontario. Charles, age 32, was working in Conquest when he took the train to Moose Jaw and enlisted in the 46th Battalion on July 6, 1915. He sailed to England aboard SS Lapland and joined the 13th Battalion in France on June 14, 1916.While on duty, he suffered an unusual injury on January 5, 1918 when he was kicked by a mule. The injury to his right hand and subsequent infection were so severe that he was unable to serve on the battlefield; therefore, he returned to Canada where he was discharged in Montreal on April 20, 1919. In total, Charles William Chartrand served four months in Canada, eight months in England and three years and eight months in France. After his discharge, he returned to Conquest. Charles Chartrand died on July 25, 1953, at the age of 69.
