LEST WE FORGET 91 CARTER, Willet L. “Jiggs” WWII Jiggs was born in Adanac, Saskatchewan, in 1922. He enlisted in World War II with the Canadian Army in Edmonton, Alberta, on December 2, 1942. He trained in Calgary, Alberta, and Camp Borden, Ontario, where he was assigned as a wireless operator. He was discharged on September 20, 1945. Jiggs was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 210 in Fort Assiniboine, where he served as President for ten years and Vice-President for three years. Jiggs passed away on October 14, 2007. CAVANAUGH, Wilfred Roy WWI Wilfred Roy Cavanaugh listed his address as Conquest and his trade as mechanic when he enlisted in Moose Jaw on March 13, 1916 with the 128th Battalion. He was born in Hamiota, Manitoba on June 11, 1895. His father George and one of Wilfred’s brothers left Hamiota in March 1905 to claim a homestead in the Fertile Valley District near Conquest. His mother and sister Lillian joined the family a month later. Roy sailed to England on August 15, 1916. He landed in France on January 13, 1917. Twenty-one days later, on February 3, 1917, while serving with the 49th Battalion, he was killed in action, suffering wounds to his head and left knee. He died at Thirty Casualty Clearing Station. He is buried in Aubigny Communal Cemetery, France, along with 3,066 of his comrades who were also killed in action. CARTHEW, James Harvey WWI James Harvey Carthew was born on January 1, 1895, in Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan. The son of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Carthew, he was also the great grandson of Laura Secord. He was working as a druggist and serving with 19 Alberta Dragoons when he enlisted in Edmonton on November 17, 1914. He left for England on the SS Carpathiaon May 29 and joined the 31st Battalion in France on September 18. He transferred to the Royal Air Force Cadet Wing on August 2, 1917 and received a commission to 2nd Lieutenant on November 3. James Carthew died on May 3, 1918 and is buried at Grantham Cemetery, Lincolnshire. He was 23 years old.
