LEST WE FORGET 89 CARSON, Thomas James WWI Thomas James Carson was born on December 14, 1891, in Omagh, Country Tyrone, Ireland. His parents were Robert and Lizzie J. Carson. He had a brother Robert who immigrated to Philadelphia. His sister Miss Thomasine Carson of Omagh was named as the recipient of his pay. It is uncertain when Thomas immigrated to Canada but starting on July 7, 1913, he was working with the Royal Bank in Ardath. When he was working as a bank teller in Swift Current, he enlisted in the 5th University Company and was assigned to the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He was declared medically fit in Montreal on February 9, 1916 and travelled to England aboard the SS Olympia, arriving on April 11, 1916. He arrived in France on June 7, 1916. The Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry was then stationed near the villages of Flers and Courcelette. On June 28, 1916, the day that Thomas James Carson was killed, the Princess Pats were being held in reserve at Chateau Belge and Ypres. Only 21 days from his arrival in France, Thomas James Carson died from wounds he sustained at Festubert on June 28. Thomas James Carson is buried in the Menin Road South Cemetery, Belgium, along with 1546 other casualties. Engraved on his tombstone are the words: “Until the day dawns, and the shadows flee away.” He is listed on the Conquest World War I Honour Roll. CARSWELL, Charles Edward “Charley” WWI Charles, the son of Stephen James and Sarah Carswell, came to Melfort, Saskatchewan with his family in 1912. He enlisted in the Army on February 14, 1916 in Winnipeg, Manitoba where he became a member of the Army’s regiment of Canadian Pioneers. He later became a member of the 106th Winnipeg Grenadiers. Private Charles Edward Carswell, aged 22, died on November 12, 1917 in Belgium, according to his military records, in the “vicinity of Passchendaele” and “4.5 miles Northeast of Ypres, Belgium.” His commemoration memorial is located in the Tyne Cot Cemetery in Zonnebeke, West-Valannderen, Belgium.
