LEST WE FORGET 63 BARSNESS, Alvin Thorsten WWII Alvin was born on July 18, 1918, in Frontier, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in World War II with the Canadian Army in Regina and was posted to the Queen’s Own Rifles Troop. He served in England, France and Scotland. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Climax Branch 40. Alvin passed away on April 16, 1996. BATH, Horace Joseph WWI Horace was born on June 5, 1889, in Stoke-on-Trent, England and came to Canada to join his brother in 1910. His parents and four other siblings arrived several years later and settled in the Conquest area. His father, Henry Steven Morris Bath, was a blacksmith. Horace was living in Conquest when he enlisted in Saskatoon on January 2, 1916, at the age of 26. He served in France with the 54th Battalion. On March 1, 1917, while on a raid at Vimy, he suffered a serious gunshot wound to his right arm and shoulder. On March 2, bone fragments were removed, but hemorrhaging and infection occurred. He was removed to the Canadian Hospital in Reading, England. The wounds did not respond well to treatment and he was unable to use his right arm well enough for combat. Horace was returned to Canada on December 16, 1917 where he continued to convalesce in St. Paul’s Hospital, Saskatoon from January 25 to April 4, 1918. Horace married Louisa Nellie Madison and they had two sons: Donald Morris and George Horace. The family moved to British Columbia in 1935 where Horace worked for over thirty years as a bookkeeper. At the age of 55, Horace Joseph Bath died in Vancouver on March 23, 1946 and is buried in the Ocean View Burial Park, Burnaby. BARTLEY, Reginald “Reg” WWII Reg was born on August 26, 1927, in Carievale, Saskatchewan. He joined the Army just before the war ended at a very young age. He was training as an infantry replacement in fort Osborne Barracks, Winnipeg when the war ended. After the war, Reg returned to Elkhorn and opened a barber shop. He married Eleanor Stein from Melville and they raised a family of three boys. Reg passed away in December 1980.
