LEST WE FORGET 53 ATKINSON, Frederick WWI Frederick was born in Calcutta, India on November 5, 1884, to Augustus and Mary Atkinson. He had five brothers and two sisters and moved to England with his family. Frederick married Florence Halse in 1910 and came to Regina, Saskatchewan in 1911. He farmed in the Marieton District until 1916 and returned to England with his wife and two sons, one daughter was born in England. He enlisted in the 13th Battalion, Kings Royal Rifle Corps and served in France. Second Lieutenant Frederick Atkinson, at the age of 33, was killed in action on April 23, 1917 in Gavrelle, Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France. He is buried at Arras, Département du Pas-de-Calais, France. He had two brothers that were killed at Gallipoli. Frederick is remembered on a stained glass memorial window at the United Church in Silton, Saskatchewan. ATWOOD, Henry George “Harry” WWI Born in Aberystwyth, Wales on January 28, 1881, Harry Atwood came to Canada in 1903. His parents were Harold George and Emily (Richardes) Atwood. He farmed near Conquest. On June 22, 1910, he married Myrtle Estella Scow. In 1913, a son Harold Lewis was born in Conquest. Sadly, Myrtle died a few weeks after Harold was born. Harry moved back to Portage la Prairie to be closer to his family. On December 28, 1914, a widower at the age of 33, he enlisted in Brandon. His wartime service included the Merchant Marine and the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He saw action for four months in France. As a member of the Canadian Mounted Rifles, on May 25, 1918, he was injured in a fall from a horse which resulted in the hilt of his sword being driven into his chest. There was severe internal hemorrhaging. He had long-term treatment in hospital in England before being returned to Canada on February 2, 1919 and discharged on March 17, 1919. Harry remarried while serving in England: his will signed on July 10, 1917 names Elizabeth Lilly Atwood, his wife, as the sole beneficiary. At the time, she was living in Shepherds Bush, London. Following the war, he and Elizabeth moved to Manitoba. Henry George Atwood died on May 24, 1936. He is buried in the Portage Hillside Cemetery where he had been the caretaker.
