LEST WE FORGET 393 ZERR, Leo Carl WWII Leo was born in Marchwell, Saskatchewan, on March 20, 1921. He enlisted in the Air Force on May 19, 1941, as an aero engine mechanic, serving in several areas in Canada on engine overhauls, aircraft assembly, and servicing aircrafts. He was discharged in December 1945, when he was transferred to Class “E” of Reserve 14. He went back to finish his high school education and went on to university, graduating as a petroleum engineer. In 1945, he married Connie and they had two children. Connie and Leo made their home in Calgary, where he enjoyed a few years of retirement before passing away in Calgary on August 7, 1992. ZORN, Eitel F. WWII Eitel was born in MacNutt, Saskatchewan, on October 15, 1915. He enlisted with the 21st A.A. Regiment on April 28, 1943, and was discharged on February 26, 1946. He married Gustie in 1941, just before going to war. In 1945, he returned to civilian life with some experience gained from his work in the quartermaster’s store. He ran a store in Langenburg and then in British Columbia. He came back to Langenburg to open a café and finally a garage in 1953. He retired from the garage in 1979. Eitel passed away on September 6, 1997. ZINKMAN, John WWII John was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, on April 21, 1915. He joined the Canadian number 6 Group “Ghost Squadron” RCAF on June 1, 1942, serving as a navigator of Halifax and Lancaster bombers. He completed an operational tour of 32 combat flights over Germany, occupied France and Norway. He was stationed with the Ghost Squadron in England, and survived a crash landing of his bomber, as well as attacks by ME 262 Jet Fighters and single and twin engine German Fighters. He was discharged on April 7, 1945. He farmed in the Broadview district and joined VLA as a credit adviser and earned his AACL certificate as an appraiser. He married Verna Petrie in 1941 and raised three children: Norman, Ronald and Deborah. John passed away on February 4, 2007.
