LEST WE FORGET 363 WAUD, William Oxley WWI William Oxley Waud was born in Bridlington, England on July 22, 1889. He was living in Conquest in 1915 when he enlisted in nearby Outlook on December 4 at the age of 26. His next of kin was his wife Eliza. He served with the Canadian Mounted Rifles in France for almost two years before he was wounded. He was first wounded by a gunshot in his left arm on November 28, 1916. After treatment, he was released and participated in the famous World War I battle at Passchendaele where he was wounded again on October 30, 1917. The second wound was very deep, but by April 8, 1918, the wound had healed. He also suffered from gas poisoning in 1918. Like countless of his colleagues, he experienced what was variously called “hysteria,” “shell shock” and “nervousness” - today called PTSD. William Waud was promoted to sergeant on April 21, 1917 and received the Military Medal on November 30, 1917. He was discharged at the age of 29 on January 16, 1919 in Regina. He returned to Outlook where he joined the Canadian Pacific Railway as a section foreman in 1923. He retired to Brownlee in 1956, and then to Moose Jaw where he was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion, as well as a member of the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires. He was a member of St. Georges Anglican Church. William died in the Moose Jaw Hospital on Sunday, July 14, 1964, at the age of 74. WEBB, Howard Alexander WWII Howard was born in Coronach, Pretty Valley, Saskatchewan in 1912. He enlisted in the Army in 1940 in Clive, Alberta and took his basic training in Camrose, Calgary, and Ontario, before shipping to England with the Calgary Tanks. Howard landed in Normandy on June 6, 1944 and served in Caen, France, and Holland before being wounded and shipped back to England in early 1945. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch Ponoka 66. Howard passed away in 1995. WEBB, Elsmore James “Jim” WWII Jim was born at Coronach, Saskatchewan, in 1915. He enlisted with the Calgary Tanks and served in England. Jim died in 1994.
