LEST WE FORGET 351 VOGEL, Edward WWII Edward was born in 1922. He joined the Armed Forces in 1941 in Regina. He was stationed in Vancouver, BC for two years and spent his third year of the Armed Forces in the hospital. He was discharged in 1944 and returned to Pelly and took up farming. Edward passed away in 1992. WAGNER, Ernest WWII Ernest was born in Morse, Saskatchewan on August 17, 1921. He enlisted into the South Saskatchewan Regiment in January 1943 and trained in Canada until July 1943 when he was shipped to the United Kingdom. In August 1943, he was transferred to the Lake Superior Regiment (motor). He trained in the United Kingdom until July 26, 1944 at which time he landed in Normandy. Almost immediately, the L.S.R. (m) was involved in battle starting with Falaise and working their way up to Normandy through Belgium and to the Netherlands. The regiment earned a reputation for being “hard fighting and courageous”. Their motto was Inter Pericula Intrepidi, fearless in the face of danger. They were usually at the front of the lines and other regiments were glad when the L.S.R. (m) was attached to their unit. Ernest was injured in the Netherlands. At the end of the war, in May, he was transferred back to the South Saskatchewan Regiment and ended up doing peacekeeping duty in Germany until he was shipped back to Canada in late 1945. He was delisted in January 1946 after three years in the Canadian Army. Ernest passed away on October 7, 1976. WACHNIAK, John WWII John was born in Melfort, Saskatchewan in 1922 and moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1930. He joined the Army in 1943 at Fort Osborne Barracks and completed his training in Shilo, MB and Debert, NS. He served with the Perth Regiment, 5th Division, 8th Army in Italy. After the war, John married Anne Budzan in 1947 and raised three children, Ron, Dennis, and Jo-Anne and enjoyed eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. John wore the Palm Leaf and was a Life Member of the Ukrainian Canadian Veteran’s Legion Branch 141 for over sixty years, serving as 3rd Vice President and many years as Sergeant-at-Arms before he passed away in March 2011.
