LEST WE FORGET 317 SMART, William J. WWII William was born in Kisbey, Saskatchewan, in 1923. He enlisted in January 1942 in Winnipeg with the Calgary Tanks and drove Sherman, Ram Tanks and others, serving in the United Kingdom, Sicily, Italy and NW Europe. He was wounded in Italy twice and spent time in the hospital in Rome. He passed away in 2000 at home in Milwaukee, the same time as the Towers were destroyed in New York. He had been a member of Russell Branch 159 of The Royal Canadian Legion for over five years. SMITH, William A. WWII William joined the Winnipeg Grenadiers. He died in a Prisoner of War camp on November 27, 1944 and is buried at Sai Wan Cemetery, Hong Kong. He was the son of William Rule and Hilda Jane smith. Memorial: Smith Lake southeast of Swan River, Manitoba. SMITH, Arthur Joseph “Buster” WWI Arthur was born in Melfort, Saskatchewan on January 10, 1899 and moved to The Pas, Manitoba at an early age. He enlisted in the Army in Winnipeg on December 6, 1915 and served in England and France with the 101st Battalion during World War I. Arthur was wounded on October 9, 1916, leaving him with shrapnel in his lung, neck and wrist. He was hospitalized in Rouen, France then transferred to Derby War Hospital in Warrington, England. He was eventually invalided back to Canada where he received medical discharge on February 20, 1918. Arthur was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion The Pas Branch 19, as well as Flin Flon Branch 73. Arthur passed away on December 25, 1970.
