LEST WE FORGET 315 SKAAR, Lester Alvin WWII Lester was born in 1919 in Broderick, Saskatchewan. In February 1941, he received his order to report to Regina. Upon volunteering for active duty he joined the 67th Battery in Rosetown, SK. He took correspondence courses in Electricity. He served in England and various theatres of war throughout Europe. He was awarded the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal and the 1939-1945 Star. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Birch Hills Branch 122. Lester passed away in 1998. SMALL, Samuel T. WWII Samuel was born in 1908 in Halbrite, Saskatchewan. He joined the Army on December 17, 1940 and trained in Winnipeg for twenty weeks. During that time, on March 1, 1941, he married Elsie Irene Spencer and after a short two weeks together, Ted was sent overseas where he served in Britain, Italy, France, Holland and Germany during World War II. After several weeks as a Gunner, he was transferred to be a cook for the remainder of his service for health reasons. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and War Medal 19391945. Upon discharge, when the war was over on January 19, 1946, he returned home to Dauphin. He joined his wife and lived in Dauphin where his only daughter Margaret May was born on April 16, 1947. In December 1947, he purchased a quarter of land which was five miles west and one mile north of Dauphin where he farmed until his passing on April 27, 1955. He had a wonderful sense of humor, was a big tease and enjoyed life. SLATER, Hubert John WWII Hubert was born in Stoughton, Saskatchewan in 1916. He joined the Navy and served on the High Seas aboard HMCS Mahone, Sankaty and Halifax during World War II. When he was discharged from the Navy, he bought a farm. He sold it in 1962 and moved to Shoal Lake and went into road construction. Later, he and his son Ross moved to Yorkton, Saskatchewan. Ross is still there. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Yorkton Branch for ten years. Hubert passed away in 1984.
