LEST WE FORGET 289 RAMSAY, Thomas Pinkney WWI Thomas was born in Sunderland, Durham, England on January 25, 1892, to Thomas and Janet Ramsay. He had one brother, one sister, two half-sisters and one half-brother. They came to Canada and farmed in Silton, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the Army on January 1, 1915 in Regina, Saskatchewan in “B” Company 46th Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force. He rose to the rank of Sergeant. He was wounded in September 1916 and in March 1918 was awarded the Military Medal. During an attack on Vine Cottages at Passchendaele in which his officer became a casualty, he took control of his platoon and kept perfect control during 24 hours of terrific bombardment. On August 8, 1918, Sergeant Thomas Pinkney Ramsay, aged 26, was killed by a sniper during an attack on an enemy machine gun nest southwest of Marcelcave. He is buried at Toronto Cemetery in Demoin, France and is remembered on a stained glass memorial window at the United Church in Silton, Saskatchewan. REDFERN, Henry Alfred WWII Henry was born in Oak Lake, Manitoba on April 17, 1917, moving early to Grenfell, Saskatchewan, one of three boys, and one sister. Attending 1 room school through high school, baseball and skiing diverted from outside chores on parents’ farm. Hiring as farmhand, Henry then enlisted on August 6, 1941 in Indian Head. He trained in Petawawa, and Camp Borden ON, then overseas in England. Qualifications GNR Redfern, were Driver Mechanic Gp C and I.C., A/L/Bdr. Henry, with 17th Field Regiment, 5th Armoured Division, arrived in Naples, Italy in November 1943. Ottona and other battles, preceded France to Germany in 1945, including enemy attack near Otterloo and Arnhem. Volunteering Pacific, war ended. Henry married Eleanor Scott of Oak Lake in 1946. Raising five sons, two daughters, they farmed near Grenfell, then at their own farm in Kenton, Manitoba, before moving to Brandon. Henry continued education, Certificate Automotive Mechanics, worked at Camp Shilo, then built business at gas bar in Brandon before retirement. Medals were Volunteer, Defence, Victory Europe, and Stars, Italy, France and Germany, 1939-1945 War. Inspired by Henry, the family built many successful businesses. Henry, “Faithful soldier”, passed away in 2002, and Eleanor in 2007. READ, Frederick Wilson WWII Frederick was born in Bethune, Saskatchewan in 1915, to John McCleave Read and Maisie Read. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served during World War II with 102 Squadron in England and in Holland. Flight Sergeant Frederick Wilson Read was killed in action on November 9, 1942. He is buried in Ben Burg, Texel Municipality, Noord Holland, Netherlands.
