LEST WE FORGET 257 NICKLIN, John J. WWI John was born in McLean, North Dakota on August 25, 1898. He enlisted in May 1916 with the Royal Canadian Air Force, 184 Canadian Infantry and served in England and Germany. He was discharged in June 1919 and married Kristjana Goodman and they lived in Mozart, Saskatchewan. John is now deceased. NISBET, Earl Grant WWII Earl Grant Nisbet, son of Charles and Hazelina (Cavanaugh), was born in Ardath on May 27, 1920, the fourth of five siblings. His brothers Gordon and George David both saw service in World War ll. He attended Ardath School until he was taken out to assist his father with work. He learned the value of hard work very early in his life. He was working as a labourer when he enlisted with the Regina Rifle Regiment, “B” Company in North Battleford. His military service lasted from June 12, 1940 until September 25, 1945. During that time, he participated in the complex and dangerous D-Day invasion on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. His company, the 7th Brigade, landed on Green Nan Beach between Courseulles and Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer. After a fierce fight, the brigade pushed east into Holland and Belgium. Private Nisbet was wounded on August 19, 1944 during the battle to close the Falaise Gap. After his discharge, Earl married Cyprienne Deschamps in 1947; the couple had five children: Barbara, Brenda, Valerie, Jeffrey and Keith. Immediately following the war, Earl took advantage of the Veterans Rehabilitation Plan and earned Bachelor of Civil Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan in 1950. He did important work for the PFRA (Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Act) during the construction of the Gardiner Dam. Between 1964 and 1976, he worked for the St. Lawrence Seaway at Niagara and Cornwall. In the late 1970s he formed his own company, E. G. Nisbet and Associates. He did contract work, sometimes overseas. He worked on one of the palaces of the King of Saudi Arabia. In retirement, Earl volunteered with the Salvation Army. His wife died in 2013, after 66 years of marriage. Earl Grant Nisbet died in St. Catharines, Ontario on April 7, 2014.
