LEST WE FORGET 233 McLAREN, William Hugh “Bill” WWII Bill was born in Heward, Saskatchewan on March 4, 1909. In December 1941, he enlisted in the Army and did his basic training in Sussex, New Brunswick. He served as a Lance Corporal in the 70th Field Battery Anti-aircraft Unit (heavy artillery) until the end of World War II, serving in Canada, England, Holland, Belgium, France and Germany. Bill was a 55-year member and Past President of The Royal Canadian Legion Grandview Branch 14 until his death in 1989. McLEAN, Malcolm Silliman “Mac” WWII Mac was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, on June 26, 1914. He enlisted in the Air Force on July 24, 1940, serving in Canada and England. He was discharged on June 12, 1945, and received the 1939-1945 Star Ribbon, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the War Medal 1939-1945, the 1939-1945 Star, the Atlantic Star, the France and Germany Clasp, and the 1945-76 Flying/Farming. Mac passed away on October 7, 1976. McLAUGHLIN, Alfred Russell WWI Alfred Russell McLaughlin listed his occupation as a steam engineer when he enlisted in Moose Jaw on February 2, 1916. He was single and 23 years of age. He was born in Griswold, Manitoba on February 17, 1892, but was living in Conquest at the time he joined the Canadian Army. His parents, Robert and Annie also lived in Conquest. Alfred served two years and four months in France. During that time, he suffered a severe gunshot wound to his thigh on April 14, 1917 while serving with the 46th Battalion. His service record summarizes the extent of his injuries as “shock, gassed, wounded, infection.” After a stay in the Military Hospital Bramshott, he was returned to Canada where he convalesced at the Saskatchewan Military Hospital and later the Earl Grey Sanitorium in Moose Jaw. Alfred Russell McLaughlin was released from the military in Regina on July 31, 1918. He married Vivian Louella Weber who passed away on November 9, 1971. They had four children: Lorne, Robert, John and Bill. Alfred Russell McLaughlin died at Shaughnessy Hospital in Vancouver on July 16, 1971.
