LEST WE FORGET 225 McDONELL, John Alexander “Jack” WWII Jack was born to William and Mary Alice McDonell in 1918 while they lived in Tribune, Saskatchewan. In 1926, the McDonell family moved to Carlyle, SK. Jack enlisted in the Canadian Army in February 1941, joining the Recce Battalion of the South Alberta Regiment. In September 1943, he married May Kraley of Dundurn. Trooper John A. McDonell was sent overseas and was killed in action in Holland on October 28, 1943. He was buried at Bergen-op-Zoom Canadian War Cemetery in Holland. His buddies called him “Creak.” GeoMemorial: McDonell Lake southwest of Stanley Mission (73P7) 55 23 104 40 . McFARLANE, Arthur William “Bill” WWII Bill was born in Gainsborough, Saskatchewan on April 3, 1918. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Engineers and trained in Regina and Chilliwack, BC before shipping overseas in the Fall of 1943. Bill’s wife, Evelyn Forster, then brought their three children to Souris to live. Sapper McFarlane served with 7 Field Company in England then went to France, where he was killed in action on July 21, 1944 at the age of 26. He is buried at Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery in Calvados, France. Bill was awarded the Battle of Britain Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, the War Medal 1939-1945, and the Memorial Cross. He is the son-in-law of J. H. Forster (1882-1916). McEACHEN, Gordon KOREA Gordon was born in Arcola, Saskatchewan on February 6, 1932. He worked for the CPR, then he enlisted with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and served in Korea, which resulted in lifetime injuries. Until his retirement, he was employed at CFB Shilo in Manitoba. Gordon was an avid fisherman and was very active in youth hockey. Many of the young hockey players referred to him as “Uncle”. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Brandon Branch 3 for 51 years and was also an active member of the Korean Veterans Association. Gordon passed away in the Brandon General Hospital on October 18, 2005.
