LEST WE FORGET 215 MAJOR, George James WWII George was born on September 17, 1913, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He joined the Royal Canadian Engineers 20th Field Company of the Canadian Army. He enlisted on June 4, 1942 and held the rank of Sapper. He served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during World War II. George drove an army truck and also worked with explosives. He was tasked with the demolishing of roads and bridges and also their reconstruction. He received the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasps. In 1945, during the liberation of the Netherlands, he met his future wife, a Dutch girl named Cornelia Holst. George requested a return to civil life on demobilization on October 23, 1946. They moved to St. Brieux, Saskatchewan to farm and raised six children. George passed away on January 15, 2003. MARSHALL, Alexander J. WWII Alexander was born in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1921. He joined the Army and served in the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders in Canada, England, France and Germany during World War II. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Fort Garry Branch 90 for twelve years. Alexander passed away in 2007. MARKEN, W.P. “Bill” WWII Bill was born in Pelly, Saskatchewan on November 10, 1907. He served with the Army’s 3rd Division in the European Theatre during World War II. Bill was awarded the Military Medal. His brother Peter William Marken served in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. Bill passed away in Oosteeklo, Belgium on January 25, 1965.
