LEST WE FORGET 199 LANSDELL, Norris “Slim” WWII Norris was born in Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan in 1919. He grew up, a typical prairie kid, shooting gophers and helping on the farm. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in Regina, Saskatchewan on October 2, 1941. His training was with the No. 17 Platoon, “C” Company C.A.(B.)T.C. No. 131 Camrose, Alberta in January 1942. His theatres of service were Canada, Britain, and the Central Mediterranean Area. Norris drove supply trucks and he suffered an eye injury by shrapnel. He never spoke much about his wartime memories to his family, but according to a Legion friend, his injury was sustained at the Battle of Ortona, Italy. He then spent recovery time in England before his honourable discharge, with the rank of Private, on November 19, 1945. His medals are: 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and War Medal 1939-1945. After the war, Norris married Winnifred Barnes of Clive, Alberta and they had three children. Norris and Winnie lived in Breton, Alberta for almost fifty years where he worked in the oil patch, sold Nature’s Fertilizer and did the caretaking at the local high school, but Norris most enjoyed his career as the local auctioneer. He was a musical man and a jack-of-all-trades. He was a member of the Warburg, Alberta Legion from 1965 to 1978. Norris passed away on August 20, 2003 and is buried in the Breton Cemetery. LEASK, Donald “Slim” WWII Slim was born in Marcelin, Saskatchewan, in 1920. He enlisted on February 23, 1942, in the Canadian Army Active in Camrose, Alberta. He was medically discharged in June 1942. Slim moved to Alberta in 1928 and farmed in the Dogpound District except for a short stint in the Army until his death in 2000. LEACH, Edgar Mervin WWII Edgar was born in Semans, Saskatchewan on May 21, 1925. He enlisted in Winnipeg in 1943 and trained in Winnipeg and Shilo before landing in England on July 2, 1944. He was attached to the Essex Scottish Regiment and served in the Northwest Europe Campaign in Holland, Belgium, France and Germany. He was discharged in March 1946 but re-enlisted in the Airborne Division and later transferred to the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, stationed at Rivers, Winnipeg and Shilo, retiring in 1970 after 25 years of service. He served as Hartney’s Town Constable and worked for Pioneer Electric in Regina and retired there. Edgar passed away on October 11, 2008 and is buried in the Windsor Cemetery in Teulon, Manitoba.
