LEST WE FORGET 187 JONES, Robert Henry “Bob” KOREANWAR Bob was born on May 3, 1931, in Turtleford, Saskatchewan. He joined the Canadian Army in 1948 and served in Korea until 1951. In late 1951, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and spent eighteen years in the Air Force serving in many places in Canada. Bob retired in 1969. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Fox Creek Branch 280 and transferred to Champion Branch 262. Bob passed away on May 7, 2004. JOYES, George Charles WWI George Charles Joyes was born in Plaistow, West Hampshire, England on May 17, 1891. The third of eight children, he immigrated to Canada at the age of eighteen, first working in Ontario and then moving to Conquest for the harvest in 1913. He was working as a farmer in the Conquest area when he enlisted in Moose Jaw on February 2, 1916. He sailed for England on August 15, 1916 and served with the 46th Battalion in France beginning May 23, 1917. Gordon also served as a rifle instructor and drill sergeant. During his time at the front, he was hospitalized with pleurodynia, a form of myalgia that results in the sudden occurrence of severe chest pain and abdominal pain. He also suffered a gunshot wound to his head on November 9, 1918, two days before the end of World War I. George Charles Joyes returned to Canada on June 28, 1919 and received his official discharge on July 6. He returned to Conquest where he married Nella Geddes. They had six children: Jean, Margaret, Don, Norman, Robert and Gordon. The couple purchased land and lived on the farm until 1952 when they moved their house into Conquest. Gordon was active in his community, teaching drill marching to local boys and ballroom dancing to several local girls. He was caretaker at the Fertile Valley Cemetery and a charter member of The Royal Canadian Legion. In 1978, suffering from Pagets Disease, he moved to the Veterans Home in Saskatoon where he died on December 29, 1981. He is buried in the Fertile Valley Cemetery.
