LEST WE FORGET 175 HOWRIE, Edward Melville WWI Edward was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, on January 10, 1896. He enlisted with the 230th Forestry Corps on March 4, 1917 and served in England and France. His brother, William, also served overseas at the same time. He was discharged on May 24, 1919, and returned to Canada and homesteaded in Mildred, Saskatchewan. Edward passed away on November 19, 1986. HREBENIK, Nick WWII Nick was born on December 17, 1916, in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, to Michael and Eva Hrebenik of the Fone Hill area. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in July 1943 in Hamilton, Ontario as an aircraft mechanic and later signed up to go overseas but was not called before the war ended. He was honourably discharged on his birthday, December 17, 1945, with the rank of Leading Aircraftman, and a Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He returned to the Yorkton area and bought a farm east of Dunleath. He and his wife, Julie (Kolenchuk), were blessed with two girls: Shirley and Bonnie. After Julie’s passing in 1986, Nick moved to Yorkton where he still enjoyed building and fixing things in his shop. Nick passed away on September 7, 2006. HOWSHIP, Charles William WWI Charles enlisted in the 229th Battalion at Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, on May 14, 1916. After basic training in Moose Jaw, he served in France with the 46th Battalion. He was wounded in Belgium, in October 1917. His right foot was injured with shrapnel, later having his right leg amputated below the knee. Charles was discharged on July 20, 1918.
