LEST WE FORGET 173 HOUNSELL, Paul Barber WWI Paul was born on December 21, 1896, in Minnesota, USA. He was one of six children born to James and Adeline (DeFrate) Hounsell. Paul was a great hunter and crack shot and enlisted in World War I before his eighteenth birthday on August 20, 1915. He was with the New Brunswick Regiment and served in France and Belgium as a sniper. He was awarded the Military Medal and came through the war without any injuries, but he contacted the flu while waiting to come home. Paul passed away in 1918 and is buried in Gosselies Communal Cemetery, Belgium. HOWE, Frank WWII Frank was born in 1918 in Carnduff, Saskatchewan. His family moved to Alberta in 1936. He enlisted in the Army when World War II started and was assigned to the 14th Army Tank Regiment (The Calgary Regiment). Frank was sent to England for training and fought in the 1941 Dieppe Raid, where he was seriously wounded and evacuated back to England. He met Barbara Holland, his future wife, while he was convalescing in the hospital. In 1955, Frank and his brother Eddie decided to return to their roots as farmers and bought farms in Butte, Alberta. He later formed Frank Howe and Company, a real estate business based in North Vancouver, BC, and his wife and their three sons lived in Vancouver. Frank passed away on August 23, 1983. HOWAT, John Crossley WWII John was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1903. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in October 1940, and was stationed at Valcartier, QC, until February 1941. In the spring of 1941, he was shipped overseas to England and stationed in Northern Scotland, near Inverness. He returned to Canada in October 1944 and was stationed at Regina, SK, and Vancouver, BC, until his discharge in February 1944. He received the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, Defence Medal, and King George VI 1939-1945 Medal. John passed away in 1992.
