LEST WE FORGET 119 ELLIS, Wayne Franklin WWII Wayne was born in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan on February 11, 1921. He attended school in Berwyn, Alberta and then worked on a farm and as a mechanic before enlisting in the Royal Canadian Air Force on January 7, 1942 after finishing two years of high school. He was in Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta; Toronto and Trenton, Ontario before going to Halifax, Nova Scotia to be shipped to England in April 1944. Wayne joined 3 Wing Royal Canadian Air Force in England on April 12, 1944 and was sent to O/S HQ in Europe on September 20, 1945. He returned to Canada on June 21, 1946 and was released on September 12, 1946 into the Reserve, General Section, Class E. Wayne was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, and the War Medal 1939-1945. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 139 in Manning, AB for many years.Wayne passed away on November 14, 2007. His brothers Murray and Albert, and sisters Ione, Marie, and Dorothy also served during World War II. EXNER, Alphonse August WWII Alphonse was born on February 16, 1925 in Grayson, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in World War II with the Canadian Army and served with the Calgary Highlanders in Europe. He was killed in action on July 25, 1944 in the invasion of German-occupied France. Alphonse’s brother, John A., also enlisted in the Army, and his sister, Amilia, joined the Air Force. Alphonse is remembered on the Honour Roll in the Manning Branch 139 of The Royal Canadian Legion. His mother received a posthumous Medal for Alphonse’s service. Alphonse is buried in the Canadian War Cemetery at Bretteville-sur-Laise, France. ELLIS, Winifred Marie WWII Marie was born in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan on March 22, 1925 and attended school in Berwyn, Alberta. She enlisted in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps on March 30, 1944 in Calgary, AB. She was sent to Kitchener, Ontario for further training on April 14, 1944 and then joined 6 Company Royal Canadian Corps of Signals as a switchboard operator until April 24, 1946. She was released on May 15, 1946. Marie was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. She passed away on November 7, 2002. Marie’s sisters Dorothy and Ione and brothers Murray, Albert, and Wayne also served during World War II.
