LEST WE FORGET 117 EKMAN, August J. “Gus” WWII August was born on a farm near Lipton, Saskatchewan in 1914. He enlisted in the Army in March 1943 and arrived in England on September 1, 1943. Gus served with the Canadian Scottish Regiment in England and in Normandy during World War II. He was killed in action on Juno Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944 and is buried at the Beny-sur-Mer Cemetery. ELLIS, Ione Ruth WWII Ione was born in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan on December 3, 1918. She went to school in Berwyn, Alberta and then worked as a housekeeper and telephone operator until she joined the Royal Canadian Air Force on August 19, 1942 in Edmonton, Alberta. Ione was then sent to Toronto for indoctrination and medicals, security checks, and tests for placement and training. She was then posted to Summerside, Prince Edward Island for further training and placement until October 24, 1943 when she was posted to Halifax, Nova Scotia. She remained there until she was released on November 29, 1945 with the rank of T/Cpl. Ione was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. She passed away on February 8, 2014. Her sisters Marie and Dorothy and brothers Wayne, Albert, and Murray also served during World War II. ELLIS, Charles Murray WWII Murray was born in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan on June 20, 1922. He quit school in Berwyn, Alberta when he was fifteen to farm and log, and then enlisted in the Army in Grande Prairie, AB on June 12, 1941. He was posted to Chatham, Ontario with 96 A/T Battery, Royal Canadian Artillery and then 5 Canadian Anti-Tank Regiment 96 Battery at Camp Sussex in New Brunswick on March 10, 1942. Murray then joined the 8th Canadian Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment in the United Kingdom from where he transferred to the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. He went to Italy on July 13, 1943 with #1 CIB and then to France on March 13, 1945. Murray went back to the United Kingdom on September 14, 1945 and then returned to Canada where he was released on December 4, 1945. Murray was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the War Medal 1939-1945. He passed away in 1988. Murray’s brothers Wayne and Albert, and sisters Ione, Marie, and Dorothy also served during World War II.
