LEST WE FORGET 73 BONE, Maurice Matthew Maurice was born on January 15, 1928 to Matthew McTaggart and Clarissa Ruth (Fish) Bone. He was raised on the family farm and then in the town of Greenan after his parents took over the Greenan General Store in 1939. As young teenagers during the war, Maurice and his sister, Dorothy, did much of the farming with older brothers Don and Russ in the forces. Following high school and a business course and work in Saskatoon, Maurice joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in October 1959. He trained in St. Jean, Quebec and then Camp Borden, Ontario. He was first posted in Aylmer, Ontario and then to training command at Westwind, Winnipeg as Battalion Warrant Officer. He left the air force in summer 1962 and returned to farm with his brother Archie. In 1978, he moved to Calgary where he lived with long-time companion Laurie Blaney and worked as office manager in a prison halfway house. Maurice passed away of cancer on June 24, 1993. BONE (ARUNDELL), Thelma Phyllis WWII Thelma was born on September 22, 1922, in Gravelburg, Saskatchewan to Philip John and Margaret (Ripley) Arundell. She grew up and went to school at Greenan, Saskatchewan. Thelma enlisted in the RCAF Women’s Division on September 2, 1942. She received basic training at Rockliffe Ottawa Manning Depot, and advanced training at St. Thomas, Ontario. She was then posted to Air Training Centre at Vulcan, Alberta, working as a nursing assistant in the base hospital. In September 1944, Thelma was promoted to Hospital Assistant, Acting Corporal. In April 1945, she was transferred to the #7 Release Centre in Calgary, Alberta where she was tasked with processing discharged service people and on January 10, 1946, she was transferred to the #5 Release Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, doing the same work. Thelma received her honourable discharge on April 11, 1946. Post war, Thelma married Donald William Bone on October 17, 1946. They had two children: Douglas Philip Bone born on January 22, 1951 and Cathryne Adele (Wickwire) born on September 30, 1952. Thelma and Don farmed and ran the Greenan store until 1989. She was an avid gardener, a craftswoman, a seamstress, and together with Don, enjoyed archaeology, and antique collecting and refinishing. Thelma passed away on June 15, 1992. BONE, Russell John “Russ” WWII Russ was born on September 11, 1922 in Eston, Saskatchewan to Matthew McTaggart and Clarissa Ruth (Fish) Bone. He grew up on the family farm and went to school at Bisley School north of Greenan. Russ joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in July 1941. He served as an Armorer on fighter planes, first with the 400 Squadron and later the 414 Squadron in the United Kingdom. His Squadron landed on the beaches on day six of the Normandy invasion, and moved through France, Holland and Germany. Russ was honourably discharged in August 1945. Post war, he married Norma McCullogh on January 10, 1946. He had four children: Norma Jean Bone, Cindy Lee Bone, Lori Maureen Bone and Matthew Russell Bone and three step-children: Tina Levigne, Danny Levigne and Mark Levigne. Russ farmed for three years after the war and then had a career in implement and car sales, working in Calgary, Edmonton and later Eston. Norma passed away on March 3, 1961 and Russ remarried on April 14, 1979 to Diane Levigne. Russ passed away on December 3, 2011.
