LEST WE FORGET 43 ARUNDELL, Donald Philip “Don” WWII Donald Phillip Arundell, CD, was born on June 27, 1924, in Mazenod, Saskatchewan, to parents Philip John and Margaret (Ripley) Arundell. His family moved back to farm in the Greenan, Saskatchewan area in 1924. He enlisted on March 26, 1943, training as an Aero Engine Technician in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. His wartime postings include Manning Depot Toronto; Brantford, Ontario; Vulcan, Alberta; Lachine, Quebec and Croft, England as Armorer with No. 6 Bomber Group in January 1944. He was released in August 1945 and re-enlisted in October 1946. He was posted in Churchill, Manitoba; Watson Lake, Yukon; and Ottawa, Ontario. Donald married Edna Fish, of Plato, Saskatchewan, in August 1949. They had two children: Kenneth John, born on January 30, 1952, and Peggy Lynn (Beaudoin), born on July 12, 1957. He was released from service in July 1950 due to his father’s illness and re-enlisted in 1951 as a vehicle technician, posted to Watson Lake and Calgary. He was promoted to Corporal in 1955 and was posted to Goose Bay, Labrador; Trenton, Ontario; #3 Fighter Wing, Zweibrücken, West Germany; Gimli, Manitoba; and Camp Borden, Ontario. He was promoted to Warrant Officer in 1970 and posted at CFB Portage la Prairie, Manitoba and released in January 1974. He did Canadian Civil Service from 1974 to 1985 as a Stores man, Civil Engineering Supply Group at CFB Portage la Prairie. In 1985, Don and Edna retired in Portage la Prairie after 42 years of service. ARUNDELL, Philip John “Phil” WWI &WWII Phil was born on August 5, 1896 in Upton Park, England to parents Philip William and Jane (Wlylie) Arundell. He moved to Canada from England with his parents and sister, Kathleen (Marjerrison) in 1910 to homestead north of Greenan, Saskatchewan. Phil joined the 1st Depot Battalion Saskatchewan Regiment on June 20, 1918, regimental #3352697, serving nine months in Canada. He farmed in the Greenan area until re-enlisting on October 4, 1939 with the SLI. In both the Sicilian and Italian Campaigns, he was in charge of all canteen services of the Canadian Legion for 1st Canadian Division and drove a canteen/field post office truck for the combat troops. One of the original “39’rs”, he served a total of five years and five months, being honourably discharged on June 20, 1945 at #12 District Depot in Regina. He married Mary Margaret Ripley in January 1918 and they had three children: Margaret Jean (Welwood), born November 23, 1919; Thelma Phyllis (Bone), born September 22, 1922 and Donald Philip, born June 27, 1924. Post war, Phil was active in The Royal Canadian Legion Elrose Branch 206 and in the Houghton community where he lived and ran the post office until his death on July 18, 1950.
