LEST WE FORGET 41 ARCHIBALD, Walter McDonald WWI Walter was born in Port Hastings, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia on March 20, 1880. He married Roberta Jane Drake on February 14, 1912 and they had three children. Walter was a railroad man before becoming a farmer. He enlisted in the 5th Brigade Ammunition Col. Canadian Expeditionary Force at Winnipeg in 1915 and went overseas with the 5th Brigade Canadian Field Artillery. He saw action in most major battles, including Vimy Ridge and was awarded the Belgian Croix de Guerre. He returned home in May 1919, and in 1920, he went to Winton and took up farming. In 1923, his wife and family from PEI joined him. Walter passed away on May 2, 1944 in a Charlottetown Hospital. ARNOLD, Glenn Gordon Glenn Gordon Arnold was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on October 10, 1952. In 1969, he was given a choice, the Military or Crowbar Hotel (they still offered that in those days). He chose the military and served with commitment of five years. After basic and trade training, he served with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Canada and a tour on a UN Mission on the Mediterranean Island of Cypress. His awards include the Canadian Service Peacekeeping Medal and United Nations Forces in Cypress Medal. Glenn is a member of the Blue Helmets and Sask. Br. PPCLI Association. He was with the Calgary Police Service for 22 years and resides in Delia, Alberta. ARCHIBALD, William “Bill” WWI &WWII Bill was born in Ireland in 1888, the eldest son in a family of four. He joined the Army at an early age and spent seven years in the British Imperial Army serving in China, India, Egypt, Malta, as well, as Britain. Upon returning to Ireland, he found his family had immigrated to Canada, so he followed them. Bill enlisted in the Army in 1914 and went overseas with the 1st Battalion. He was wounded and captured by the Germans. He returned to Canada and married Margaret McPhail in 1939, and they had a daughter, Uldis. Bill was in the Royal Canadian Navy for a time in WWII, escorting naval recruits across Canada. He passed away in 1966 and his wife passed in 1976. They are buried at Bracebridge, Ontario. Bill had been a long-time member of The Legion.
