LEST WE FORGET 35 A Letter from Betty Knorr about the Power of Social Media Written December 4, 2019 My grandmother was born and raised on the reserve, south of North Battleford. She married off the reserve and had six children, of which the oldest three enlisted in the second world war. My mom, her older sister and brother. We have all heard or read stories about the power of social media (Facebook) reuniting people or lost items. Someone had posted on Facebook the name Margaret G. Hurton, wanting to know anyone who may recognize the name. Through sharing posts, my cousin in Saskatoon contacted the person. She who was contacted would not mail the picture for two reasons, afraid it would get broken in the mail, and no proof it was going to the right person. My cousin in Saskatoon put me in touch with the lady in North Battleford and I made arrangements to go and pick the picture up in person. I was apprehensive as we have all heard stories about North Battleford, and I knew from the name I was going to a First Nations home. The lady had come into possession of this picture when she was cleaning out her mother’s estate. It was wrapped in cardboard and she had no idea how her mother came into possession of it. While talking, we realized that her grandfather and my grandmother were brother and sister! These pictures were given out to First Nations people who served in the war, but I don’t know what year they were given out. On a special note, I picked this up on November 7th, just in time for November 11. My mother has been deceased for 45 years. I have been a member of The Legion for 41 years. Through Facebook, my uncle’s family has found their dad’s picture, and I have my mom’s. There is still one more out there. Who knows where it is?
