LEST WE FORGET 365 WALEN, Helga Margaret WWII Helga was born on June 11, 1924. She enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on November 4, 1942 and served as an equipment assistant at the rank of Leading Aircraft Woman during World War II. WARD, George Newins PEACETIME George was born in Newburgh, New York, USA on February 9, 1944. He was Protestant Chaplain at CFB Greenwood, NS from 1974 to 1976; at CFS Goose Bay, Labrador from 1976 to 1978; at LdSH (RC) (Calgary) from 1978 to 1981; 1 Service Battalion (Calgary) from 1981 to 1982; CFBWainwright, Alberta from 1982 to 1983. He was promoted to Major in 1983 and served a winter tour as a UN Peacekeeper in Cyprus from 1979 to 1980. He was Base Chaplain at CFB Shilo in Manitoba from 1983 to 1987. George retired in 1987 due to medical problems. In total, he served thirteen years from November 1974 to October 1987. WALKER, Norman Everett WWII Norman was born on April 8, 1922 at his parent’s farm north of Greenan. His parents were Jim and Annie Walker. He went to school in Greenan. Norman enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve on July 26, 1941 and trained at Esquimalt on HMCS Unicorn. He served in Canada, on the High Seas and Britain on the Ship HMCS Canso, a minesweeper doing escort duty in the Atlantic theatre and sweeping mines during the invasion of Normandy and at Juno Beach. Everett received his honourable discharge on October 23, 1945. His medals and decorations include the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star with Atlantic Clasp, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and War Medal 1939-1945. Everett started farming in the Greenan area in April 1946. He married Lucy Fish (Plato) in 1947. Together they had four children: Linda in 1948, Jack in 1950, Gerry in 1952 and Kevin in 1955. They enjoyed hunting, fishing, curling, horses, watching rodeo, and farming and later spending time in their new house at Saskatchewan Landing. Everett was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Elrose Branch 206 and later attended in Kyle. Lucy passed away in 2002 and Everett in 2005.
