LEST WE FORGET 361 VEITENHEIMER, Irene PEACETIME Irene enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1961. She was posted in St. Jean, Quebec; Clinton, Ontario and Cold Lake, Alberta, serving for two years regular service. WAGAR, Howard WWII Howard Wagar, of Loon Lake, Saskatchewan, met his wife, Jean Brown of Hughton, Saskatchewan, in Saskatoon. He was an LAC in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. They moved to the farm north of Hughton in 1948 and they had three children: Darcy in 1948, Gwen in 1951 and Neil in 1956. He moved to Rosetown in 1980 and his son Neil continued to farm. Howard passed away in 2005. VERAAS, Audfinn WWII Audfinn Verass was born in Lindas, Norway on June 11, 1924. He was the son of immigrants, Frederick and Anna Veraas, who farmed and operated a store in Strongfield. Audfinn was working as a mechanic in Regina when he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force on July 17, 1942. He served with 102 Squadron of the RCAF from RAF Base Pocklington, UK. It was a heavy bomber squadron that engaged in a leaflet-dropping raid in the early days of the war. Audfinn and his comrades in a Hanley-Page Halifax aircraft failed to return from a night-time bombing raid over Hamburg on July 30, 1943. He was nineteen years old. Flight Sergeant Audfinn Veraas is commemorated at Runnymede Memorial, UK.
