LEST WE FORGET 359 UPTON, Earl J. WWII Earl was the son of Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Upton. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. His brothers, Raymond, Melvin and Herbie also served in the Forces during World War II. His brother Delmas was a war worker. UTIGARD, Raymond Anton WWII Raymond Anton Utigard was born in Hawarden to homesteaders, Bert and Millie Utigard, on April 4, 1917. The parents had come to Canada in 1909 from Eikesdal, Norway. During the depression, he moved to Montana in 1936 to live with an uncle. In 1939, he joined the US National Guard, and in 1940 enlisted in the US Army, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served in Australia and New Guinea in the Pacific Theatre. He was killed in 1945, at the age of 28, when he stepped on a land mine on the Island of Mindanao. Staff Sergeant Utigard was awarded a Purple Heart. UPTON, Melvin M. WWII Melvin was born in Davidson, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on June 2, 1941. He served with the 37th L.A.A. Battery in Rosetown and Petawawa, Ontario and went overseas on November 11, 1941. Melvin served in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. He also served in Belgium and France with the Anti-Aircraft Battery. He then transferred to the Saskatoon Light Infantry and served in Belgium and Holland with them, returning from Overseas on October 4, 1945. Melvin was discharged from the Army on November 10, 1945.
