LEST WE FORGET 349 SWEET, Vincent Claude WWII Vincent was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on November 19, 1922. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at the age of nineteen. He took his basic training at Manning Pool Training Centre in Toronto, Ontario. He was promoted to Leading Air Craftsman in St. Thomas, Ontario. From there, he was posted to #11 Service Flying Training School inYorkton, Saskatchewan (Aircraft Electrical Division). In 1945, he went overseas on the troop ship Aquitania, being posted to #6 Bomber Group inYorkshire, England where he was promoted to Corporal. The latter part of his service was spent in Transport Command with the Occupational Force. He returned home in May 1946 and was discharged in Winnipeg, Manitoba in June 1946. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Elrose Branch 206. Vincent passed away on July 12, 2014. TALBOT, Lyell Morgan WWII Lyell Talbot was born in 1920. He joined the Canadian Army in June 1941. He served with the 67th L.A.A. Battery in Rosetown. He went overseas with the 67th L.A.A., a regiment from Camp Petawawa, in November 1941. He remained with the 67th until March 1944, then transferred to the 70th L.A.A. Battery, 8th L.A.A. Regiment, 4th Armoured Division. He married Dorothy May Cullum, of Reigate, Surrey, England. He went to France in June 1944, returned to Canada in August 1945 and was discharged in September 1945. He was president of The Royal Canadian Legion for many years in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. Lyell passed away in 2000. TAIT, Peter Ibister WWI Peter was born on June 4, 1883, in the Orkney Islands, Scotland. He was the youngest of a family of seven, coming to Canada in 1905. His brother, William, from Swift Current, Saskatchewan, is listed as his next of kin on his attestation paper. On December 18, 1914, Peter enlisted in the Canadian Army in Swift Current, joining the 9th Canadian Mounted Rifles. He later transferred to the Royal Canadian Dragoons. He served in England, France and in the Army of Occupation in Germany. He was awarded the Military Medal, British War Medal and Victory Medal. Peter was honourably discharged on May 16, 1919. He came to the Sanctuary, Saskatchewan District in 1927 where his brother William worked for the Beaver Lumber Co. He worked for various farmers including Dave White and Pete McDonald. He and his brother purchased the W1/2 2624-16 form the Hudson’s Bay Company, located one and a half miles west of Mondou, Saskatchewan. He started farming the land in 1929 and continued to do so until his death in 1948. The land was then farmed by his nephew Donald Tait. Peter had been a member of both Kyle Branch and Elrose Branch of The Royal Canadian Legion.
