LEST WE FORGET 341 SONMOR, Rick PEACETIME Rick was born in Elrose, Saskatchewan on August 28, 1958, to Margaret and the late Leif Sonmor of the Forgan District. He joined the Armed Forces in 1977 and travelled throughout Canada and part of the United States as a cook in the Navy. He left the Armed Forces in 1979. This picture of Rick was taken at his Graduation from Recruit School in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia in September 1977. STEPHENSON, Leslie Currie “Les” RCMP Les was born on March 25, 1919, in Belmont, Manitoba. His parents, Joseph and Annie Stephenson, had seven children, six boys and one girl. Les (or Stevie as he was then called) received all of his schooling in Belmont. In 1940, he joined the RCMP at the Training Depot in Regina. In 1947, he and Mary Royce were married in Saskatoon. They raised four children: Margaret, Dorothy, Robert and Donald. Like many members of the RCMP, Les served in many Saskatchewan communities, including Elbow, Imperial, Humboldt, Rosetown, Kamsack and Outlook. In 1965, Les retired in Outlook where he operated the Irrigation Centre Motel. He continued serving his community through involvement in sports and community government. Les enjoyed seeing his thirteen grandchildren whenever he was able to. He loved his career with the RCMP where he respected his colleagues and was, in turn, respected by them. Les passed away on March 5, 2005, at the age of 85. He is buried in the Outlook Cemetery. SPEARS, Ivan H. WWII Ivan was born in Tara, Ontario on July 5, 1916. At the age of 23, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a radio telegraph operator and served as such from September 1939 to September 1945. Ivan received his discharge as a Petty Officer Telegraphist in 1945.
