LEST WE FORGET 327 ROWLEY, Les A. WWII Les was born in Hawarden, Saskatchewan on June 15, 1927. He moved with his parents, Leo and Luella, to Elrose in 1974. Les married Janet “Bunny” Hislop from Arcola, Saskatchewan in June 1952. He worked for the Saskatchewan Power Corporation from which he retired in August 1983. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Elrose Branch 206. Les passed away on September 10, 1986. SCHMIDT, Howard WWII Howard was born on February 11, 1923, in Milbank, South Dakota, USA. He joined the Canadian Army on June 21, 1943 and served with the South Saskatchewan Regiment in the United Kingdom, England, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany and Normandy during the SecondWorldWar. He was wounded on July 20, 1944 and returned to service in France a few months later. He was wounded a second time on December 16, 1944 on the Holland border and returned back to the regiment in March of 1945 until the war ended. He returned to Halifax on the Queen Elizabeth Ship with the South Saskatchewan Regiment in November of 1945 and from there, boarded the train to Weyburn, Saskatchewan where they disbanded. He was discharged on January 5, 1946. He was awarded the 1939 – 1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the George VI Medal on discharge. Later, he received the Normandy Campaign Medal, thank You Canada Medal from Holland, Normandy Chest Badge 2004 and WWII 75th tribute pin 1939 – 2014. He was an active member in the Weyburn Legion Branch 47 for 52 years. SAUNDERSON, Leslie James “Les” WWII Les was born on September 2, 1918, in Cappon, Alberta, the third son of Lorne and Sarah Saunderson, and grew up on a farm near Elrose, Saskatchewan. In 1942, he enlisted in the navy. While stationed in Victoria, British Columbia, he married the love of his life, Alma Kolbenson, on April 1, 1944. They moved back to Saskatoon along with their firstborn son Ken in 1945 where their other four children were born. Les had several jobs in Saskatoon and in 1946 he started working for Robin Hood Multifoods where he worked for 37 years until his retirement in 1983. Les passed away on April 2, 2012.
