LEST WE FORGET 299 OLIPHANT, Archie Martin WWII Archie was born on December 8, 1918 in Hughton, Saskatchewan. He moved to Vancouver, British Columbia in 1947 and to Coquitlam in December 1973. He married Ruth Edlund in December 1948 and they had two daughters. Archie joined the Army on November 25, 1940 and transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force on July 25, 1941. He trained in Brandon, Manitoba and St. Thomas, Ontario and was stationed at Claresholm, Alberta before being sent overseas. He was discharged as an Aero Engine Mechanic in England on January 7, 1946. He became a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Collingwood Branch 48 in Vancouver in 1959 and served as 1st, 2nd and 3rd Vice-PresidentExecutive Committee. He was Chairman of the Entertainment Committee for three years, Chairman of the Cribbage for four years and Children’s Christmas Party for two years. He served on the Poppy Committee for two years, Finance Committee for two years, Sick & Visiting for one year and Christmas Party and Track and Field Officiating. He transferred to Branch 119 in Port Moody in 1974 and served on the executive for ten years including 1st and 2nd Vice President. He started the Meat Draw on a weekly basis and served as Chairman of Cribbage, member of the Golden Spike Committee, Zone Representative, Ways & Means Committee and Fly the Flag Committee. In addition to being very active in The Royal Canadian Legion, Archie was also involved in his community. He was coach and umpire for Little League Baseball Association at Kilarny School in 1963, 1965 and 1966. He also coached the Norkway Youths Ball in 1965-1966 and Branch 146 Track and Field for three years. Archie served as President of the “West 4th Avenue” Curling Club for three years and Legion Curling Club Branch 88 in 19751976. He was Guide for one year for the Clam’s Bathtub Race. Archie assisted in the installation of the new PA System for Branch 119 and was Chairman of the Senior Citizen’s Club. OLIPHANT, Donald Ethbert WWII Donald was born in Hughton, Saskatchewan on July 3, 1916, the son of Ethbert “Bert” and Christie Oliphant who had moved to Hughton from Milden in 1915. Donald was enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the war and was posted in Dryden, Ontario. Donald married Donalda Bale of Elrose and they made their home in North Battleford. Donald passed away in 1985.
