LEST WE FORGET 283 MEWIS, Albert Leslie WWII Albert enlisted in the Canadian Army, joining the 67th Anti-aircraft Battery at Rosetown under the command of Major Harry McKenzie, a Veteran of World War I. They lived in tents and trained in the Rosetown Sports Ground. From Rosetown, the battery was moved to Petawawa, Ontario and from there they were moved to Halifax. On Friday November 13, they sailed from Halifax to England: a bad day for the superstitious. Albert served overseas in the British Isles and northwest Europe, returning to Saskatoon in January 1946. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Elrose Branch 206 for many years. Albert passed away on August 19, 2008. MILLAR, George Ronald “Ron” WWII Ron was born in Bethune, Saskatchewan on December 18, 1916. He received his education at Bethune then went to normal school in Regina. He taught school at Clarendon School south of Chamberlain and Indian Head. He joined the Air Force in Saskatoon and took training as a pilot at No 4 E.E.T.S. He was posted to Leemington, North York, England attached to RAF No. 77 Squadron. He flew back from a raid on St. Nazaire on one engine of Whitley Bomber and crashed on landing on February 15, 1942. He was awarded the rank of Flight Sergeant. MEYERS, Joseph John WWII Joseph was born in Leipzig, Saskatchewan, on November 11, 1909. He enlisted in the Army in 1944, serving in Canada with the Canadian Artillery at Shilo, Manitoba. He did not go overseas because he was discharged in 1945 due to medical reasons. He returned to farming in the Big River area. Joseph passed away on January 3, 1998.
