LEST WE FORGET 281 McMANN, Arthur Andrew “Art” RESERVES Art was from Elrose, Saskatchewan. He joined the Reserves sometime between spring of 1953 and fall of 1955. MERRIMAN, Thomas Leslie WWI &WWII Leslie was born in Chippen Campden, Gloucestershire, England, on January 22,1899. He joined the 188th Battalion on March 10, 1916, and was discharged on April 24, 1919. He then joined the 16/22 Saskatchewan Horse on July 24, 1940. He was discharged on March 23, 1942, after serving in England, France, Germany, Belgium and Canada. He received the General Service & Victory Award in World War I and the Voluntary Service Award in World War II. Upon returning fromWorld War II, Leslie married Rose Ellen Smith on December 19, 1928, and they raised three children in the Springside area. Leslie passed away on November 8, 1981. McWILLIAMS, Ray Eugene WWII Ray Eugene McWilliams was born in Holdfast on October 16, 1917, the son of James and Agnes McWilliams of Loreburn. He enlisted in the 14th Canadian Hussars (Reconnaissance Regiment) in Regina on August 15, 1940. He was killed in action near Hoogerheide, Holland on October 12, 1944. The conflict, known as the Battle of Woensdrecht, was part of the overall strategy to drive the German army out of Holland. On October 12, the German army counter attacked. Confused fighting took place in a largely unprotected wooded area. The result was a high number of Canadian casualties, including Trooper McWilliams. He is buried alongside 347 of his Canadian comrades in Schoolselhof Cemetery near Antwerp, Belgium.
