LEST WE FORGET 279 McKNIGHT, Frank Henry WWII Frank was born in Wartime, Saskatchewan on February 5, 1918. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in October 1940. His first posting was to Manning Depot, Toronto, then on guard duty at Dunnville, Ontario. He then did Initial Training School in Toronto and was sent to Fort William, Ontario. On March 29, 1941, he started elementary flying and then from there on to Service Flying School in Dauphin, Manitoba. He received his Pilot’s Wings on August 6, 1941, going then to Halifax and overseas, landing at Bournemouth. He started Operational Training on Wellingtons in October 1941. After the completion of his training in February 1942, he departed for the Middle East, then on Gibraltar. They remained in Malta for a month and on to Egypt. He flew several missions with 38 Squadron RAF. On November 7, 1942, they crashed on takeoff and returned to England via West Africa and Gibraltar. He took courses as a Flying School Instructor and from August 1943 to July 1944, he was an Operational Flying School Instructor. After a course on Beaufighters in England, he started operations with 404 Squadron of the RCAF on March 4, 1944.They converted to Mosquitoes on April 2, 1944 and flew them until the end of the war. Frank returned home in July 1945 and was released from the services in September. McLELLAN, Walter “Earl” WWII Earl was born in Penzance, Saskatchewan on September 4, 1916. He served in the Army with The Calgary Regiment (Tank) during World War II from September 22, 1941 to October 10, 1945 in Canada, the United Kingdom, England, Scotland, France, Italy, Germany, Belgium and Holland. Earl worked in the Q. M. Stores and one of his jobs was to drive supplies to the men on the front lines. He learned morse code for sending and receiving messages. Earl passed away on November 24, 1995. McLELLAN, Robert Cecil “Bob” WWII Bob was born in Penzance, Saskatchewan on December 5, 1921. He enlisted in the Army and served during World War II with The Calgary Regiment (Tank) from October 1942 to 1945 in Canada, the United Kingdom, Continental Europe and Central Mediterranean. He was wounded in action in Italy when his tank was hit. As a result, he lost his hearing in one ear. Bob passed away on June 25, 2008.
