LEST WE FORGET 269 MASON, Earl W. WWII Sergeant Earl Mason served overseas with Royal Canadian Air Force 121 Eagle Squadron (Fighters) in England. He was killed overseas on September 15, 1941 when he crashed doing unauthorized low aerobatics in a Hurricane fighter while on a training flight. He is buried at Brookwood Military Cemetery in Surrey, England. McCALLUM (BOERJAN), Blanche WWII Blanche was born in Elrose, Saskatchewan in 1920. She enlisted in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps in Regina on October 2, 1941. Blanche was one of the first women from the Elrose area to go into the service. She was in active service in motor work at Dundurn. She met her future husband, Carl McCallum at Dundurn where they were both stationed. They were married on January 16, 1943. Blanche was discharged in May 1943. She was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Elrose Branch 206 Auxiliary. Blanche passed away in 1989. MATTHIES, Raymond Richard WWII Raymond was born in the Bienfait, Saskatchewan area on October 24, 1926. He enlisted in the Army with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and served in Canada during World War II. He guarded German prisoners of war in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Since his family has a German background, it is believed to be the reason he was assigned to guard the Germans as he could communicate with them. He had many hand-made items that were made for him by the prisoners. He told his family it was because he was good to them during the war. Raymond passed away on August 11, 1989.
