LEST WE FORGET 261 MacDONALD, Jim WWII Jim MacDonald was born on May 29, 1921, to Alex and Della MacDonald of the Hughton District. He joined the 67th Battery at Rosetown and took his basic training in Petawawa, Ontario. Jim was in the Canadian Army for less than a year before receiving a medical discharge. He spent most of his army days escorting prisoners across the country. McKENZIE, Harry “Norman” WWI &WWII Harry was born on February 22, 1891. He enlisted in World War I with the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles and had a distinguished military record in the war, being mentioned in dispatches, and awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field at the Battle of Passchendaele. Harry again returned to the Army in 1939 having been active in the Reserves between wars. He was Commanding Officer of the 67th Light Anti-Aircraft Battery which was mobilized at Rosetown. He went overseas with the unit and was away from home on active service for about five years. Harry passed away on July 1, 1963. MacDONALD, Robert Wiltse “Bob” WWII Bob enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1940. He served on the Prince Robert for three years. He worked on the engines and boilers. He met lifelong friends and enjoyed meeting up with some of the “Division Number Nine” guys at reunions. Bob’s ship, HMS Prince Robert, was the first ship into Hong Kong after the Japanese surrender to pick up Canadian Prisoners of War. This had a lasting effect on him, and he often reminded his family that freedom came at a price and that we should always be thankful for the freedom we have. Robert passed away in 1988.
