LEST WE FORGET 235 IRVINE, Dean Petty Officer 2nd Class Dean Irvine has served on five major NATO Tours totaling 1600 actual sea days. He has served on HMCS Gatineau, HMCS St. John’s, and HMCS Montreal. Highlights of his career include participating in the NATO Intervention in Sarajevo, in the blockade in Haiti, and serving on the first Canadian ship in the Black Sea since World War II. One of the most dangerous assignments was during the Turbot War, which was a civil conflict between Canada and Spain over fishing rights on Grand Banks. Petty Officer Irvine is presently posted to the PCC (Personnel Coordination Centre) at the Halifax Dock Yard. JACOBSEN, Melford WWII Melford was born in Pekin, North Dakota, USA on August 17, 1918. He enlisted in the Army with the 31st Reconnaissance Regiment in 1942, serving in Canada, the United Kingdom and Europe. He was discharged in 1946, and received the Defence Medal, and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Speers Branch 116. Melford passed away on December 10, 1995. JACKSON, Sidney Henry WWII Sidney was born in Speers in 1918. He enlisted with the Air Force in 1942, serving in Canada. He was discharged in 1946 and received the Canada Defence Medal. He passed away on December 14, 1982. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Speers Branch 116 for 35 years.
