LEST WE FORGET 221 HELLER, Daniel “Danny” WWII Daniel was born on June 16, 1925 and grew up in the Rocky Mountain School District in the Cypress Hills area, southwest of Maple Creek. He signed up in Regina in June 1944 and did his basic training in the Army. Training was in various places including Maple Creek, Regina, Halifax/Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and included marching, how to acknowledge ranks, heavy artillery, shooting sten guns, machine guns and rifles, anti tank guns and how to throw hand grenades among many other things. An interesting note was that the anti tank guns artillery could go through 12” of steel. His unit was the Regina Rifles A Company. His brother, Johnny, was also in the Regina Rifles, but in the D Company. Danny served in England, Belgium, and Holland and was part of the occupation force in Germany after the war was over. Another brother, Emmanuel, was in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps trucking supplies to the troops. Emmanuel was discharged in the early part of 1946 and Johnny was discharged in March 1946. Danny’s best buddy was a fellow from Consul by the name of Harold McConnell whom he met in Holland. Harold was sent home as soon as the war was over. Danny wrote letters to his sister and brother at home very two weeks. Letters were written on air mail paper. He would receive a letter or a care package from home about once a month. Some of his best remembered items that he received in those packages were knitted socks and mittens as well as chocolate and fruit cake. Danny was sent back to Canada in September 1946 and was discharged in Calgary in October of that same year. HENNING, Stanley “Rae” WWII Stanley “Rae” Henning was born in Rosetown in December 1919. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 and was posted overseas in 1943. He was wounded and subsequently discharged in November 1945.
