LEST WE FORGET 207 Comrade Harold Hague was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for more than 60 years and has served in many capacities during that time. Harold served as Provincial President of the Saskatchewan Command in 19711973, as well as President of the Regina Branch 001 and Chairperson of the Poppy Campaign. He was a recipient of the Royal Canadian Legion’s Meritorious Service Medal and had a Life Membership for his devotion to, and care of, past and present Veterans. He has also been Chair and Co-Chair of the Regina Remembrance Day Service and was instrumental in arranging the indoor service at the Brandt Centre, which is currently the most well-attended Remembrance Day event in Regina. Harold was born on June 13, 1921, in Earl Grey, Saskatchewan and grew up in Regina. He signed up for active service in the Royal Canadian Navy after high school and joined the Royal Regina Rifles in the 1930’s. He was a Navy Veteran of the Second World War’s D-Day battle in northern France, a Signalman among a flotilla of seven Canadian minesweeper ships tasked with finding and destroying underwater German mines at Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944. Harold has been awarded with the Lieutenant Governor’s Military Service Medal, the Commissionaire’s Distinguished Service Medal, the Certificate of the Queen Golden Jubilee Medal 1952-2002, as well as the highest honour from France, the rank of Knight of the National Order of Legion. After the war ended, Harold returned to Regina and took a job at Loggie’s Shoes located downtown, eventually becoming a partner and then an owner in 1978. In 2014, Loggie’s ended its tenure as one of the longest running businesses in the city after 107 years of service. Harold and his wife Jan met in the mid 1970’s when Harold was in Ontario buying supplies for Loggie’s Shoes. They hit it off instantly and Harold spent the next three years making monthly trips east to see Jan. In 1979, Jan moved to Regina to be with Harold and they eventually got married. “He was just such a kind, giving person, there was an immediate attraction there… There was something about him that you just can’t help to be drawn to him… just a wonderful man.” Jan Hague has said. Harold was a founder of the Regina Downtown Business Improvement District (RDBID) in 1981, he was instrumental in the development of Regina’s downtown. He has also played a leading role in the establishment of the Douglas Park Track and Field facility and the YWCA.
