LEST WE FORGET 173 FORGIE, Herbert WWI Private Herbert Forgie served overseas with the 4th Machine Gun Company. He was killed in action near Arleux, France after the Battle of Vimy Ridge. FRANCESCONE, Benito “Ben” SPECIAL DUTY AREA Benito was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 1936. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1953 at the age of seventeen. After basic and trades training, he was transferred to Macdonald, Manitoba. His next base was Mount Hope in Hamilton, then on to 3(F) Wing in Germany. From Germany he did a tour in Cold Lake, Alberta; Petawawa, Ontario; Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and finished off 33 years of service in Trenton, Ontario. Ben was a flight Engineer and accumulated approximately ten thousand flight hours. He was awarded the CD2, Peace Keeper Medal, and the Special Services Medal. Ben passed away in December 2016. FOSTER, Guy WWI Guy was born in Hampshire, England, in 1886. He joined the 10th Canadian Mounted Rifles on May 28, 1915 and served in Canada and France during World War I. He was wounded at the Battle of Vimy Ridge and totally blinded. He spent some time at the Dunstan School for the Blind in England before returning home to the farm. In 1936, Guy returned home to England then went to France to attend the dedication of the Vimy Ridge Monument. In 1946, there was a gathering of the war blind in Toronto, at which time Guy received a medal. He also received the General Service Medal and the Victory Medal. Guy passed away in 1969.
