LEST WE FORGET 111 COQUET, Dominique Joseph Julien WWI Dominique was born in Carquefou, France on March 1, 1896. He served in the French Army during World War I. In the evening of October 13, 1916, he went with a fighter patrol to obtain some information. The citation he received at the time specifies that he gave proof of uncommon courage and energy by successfully carrying and delivering a device g. 3 across enemy lines in an area strewn with obstacles. He persisted for more than three hours. He served with the infantry from April 8, 1915 to the end of the war as part of the infantry. The following is a story told by Dominique to his daughter. The soldiers were traveling to the front lines by train and when they crossed Paris, one of his friends asked him to join him and jump off the train to go visit his family who lived in Paris. Dominique being very young and adventurous did not need to be coaxed. He followed him and jumped off with him. They walked to the friend’s home and had a marvelous break. He said his friend’s family were so kind and nice. He enjoyed that immensely. She asked how they could do that and if they were not afraid of being caught and punished. So, he said “What could they do?” She said they could have thrown them in jail. He laughed and said: “That would have been better for us than going to the battlefields and the commanders knew that”. He said that after a while when his friend knew that the last train was going through Paris they got back on. They had not missed anything. Dominique received a bronze star-studded war cross in September 1918. After the war, he came back to St. Brieux, Saskatchewan where he was brought up from the age of ten. He became a farmer and raised a big family. Dominique passed away on December 8, 1983. CORBETT, Ken WWII Ken was born in Fenelon Falls, Ontario in 1914. Ken joined the Canadian Army in January 1943 and served overseas in Italy and Holland with the RCASC. He returned home to Forgan, Saskatchewan in February 1946.
