LEST WE FORGET 107 COAKWELL, Kathleen E. “Kay” WWII Kay was born in Hanover, Ontario. She left the staff of the Royal Bank and enlisted in the Air Force in Toronto in October 1942. Her father was a World War I Veteran and went from Valcartier Camp, Quebec with the first Canadian contingent to go overseas. Kay’s trade was Clerk Operations working in the secret service of Bomber Reconnaissance Flying Control. She married Lorne Coakwell on November 18, 1942 and a year later she was posted with her husband from Newfoundland to Jericho Beach, Vancouver. She served her tour of duty for the greater part at Torbay and St. John’s, Newfoundland. She was discharged when the Women’s Division was demobilized. After Lorne’s discharge in May 1945, they arrived at his father’s farm with their four-weekold son, Dale. The following spring, they took over his father’s farm until Lorne’s death in October 1967. Kay eventually moved to Elrose until her passing. COLLINS, Edwin WWII Edwin was born on March 3, 1914, in Regina, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the Regina Rifle Regiment as a non-permanent member on March 3, 1936, at the age of 22. Subsequently, on October 6, 1939, he engaged to serve in the Canadian Active Service Force with the Regina Rifle Regiment. He transferred to the Saskatoon Light Infantry on December 1, 1939 and embarked for the United Kingdom on December 8, 1939. Edwin was appointed A/Corporal on November 8, 1940. He transferred to the Canadian Division Reconnaissance Overseas Branch on February 8, 1941 and was confirmed Corporal on February 10. Edwin was promoted to A/Squadron Quartermaster-sergeant on August 11, 1941 and confirmed Squadron Quartermaster-sergeant on November 11, 1941. He embarked with the Mediterranean Force on August 16, 1943 and evacuated to the United Kingdom on July 30, 1944. Edwin returned to Canada as a Prisoner of War Escort on August 28, 1944. He was posted to Pictou Highlanders in Sussex, New Brunswick on April 7, 1945 and returned to No. 12 District Depot on May 12, 1945. Edwin was discharged from service on July 3, 1945 by reason of long service. He received the Efficiency Medal, 19391945 Star, Italy Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the War Medal 1939-1945. Edwin passed away on October 2, 1983 in Rosetown, SK. COAKWELL, Lorne R. WWII Lorne was the second oldest son of John and Margaret Coakwell. He received his education at the Hester and Milan Schools in the Coteau View District. He farmed with his father and older brother Harold until World War II broke out. He enlisted in the Army and was stationed at Dundurn, Saskatchewan where he remustered to the Royal Canadian Air Force on March 31, 1941. He served as a motor mechanic with the transport section at various stations across Canada from the Queen Charlotte Island, British Columbia, to Torbay, Newfoundland. Lorne met his wife, Kathleen Agombar, also serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force in St. John’s. Lorne and Kay were married on furlough on November 18, 1943 in Hanover, Ontario. After his discharge in May 1945, they arrived at his father’s farm with their four-week-old son, Dale. The following spring, Lorne took over the farm and continued to farm until his death in October 1967. Lorne and Kay were blessed with two sons, Dale Rodney, and Gerald Lorne.
