It involved dangerous work in small boats patrolling, usually at night, for enemy submarines. The flotilla was refueling on the afternoon of February 14, 1945, in Oostende Harbour in Belgium. Fuel spilled onto the water and ignited, demolishing five torpedo boats and killing 62 seamen, including 26 Canadians, many of whom were sleeping aboard the crafts. Reginald Crang, whose body was never recovered, is commemorated at the Halifax Memorial for servicemen lost at sea, and also at the Oostende Naval Memorial. Reginald was survived by his parents and three siblings: Robert, Edith and Ethel.
