LEST WE FORGET 83 CHESTNUT, Guy Alexander WWII Sergeant Pilot Guy Alexander Chestnut of the RCAF was born in Tyndal, Manitoba, on August 24, 1917. His parents were Dr. William Alexander Chestnut and Mrs. Lena Catherine Chestnut. Dr. Chestnut, originally from Ireland, practiced medicine in Moosomin, SK, for many years, beginning in 1919. Guy graduated from Moosomin High School in 1934 and worked for the Royal Bank in a number of communities before he enlisted with the RCAF in Regina on June 4, 1940. He served with No. 609 West Riding Squadron. Chestnut’s Spitfire was hit by enemy flak when he was attempting to return to base at Manston, England, on June 11, 1941 after a mission over France. His plane crashed into a cliff near Ramsgate, and his body was never found. He was 23 years old. He is commemorated at Margate Cemetery, Kent, and at St. George’s Royal Air Force Chapel at RAF Biggin Hill. Guy’s brothers Jack and Harold also participated in World War II. His sister Margaret Helen Campbell lives in Outlook. CHRISTIE, Thomas Anderson WWI Thomas Anderson Christie, who was born on November 10, 1889 in Whithorn, Wigtown, Scotland, listed his occupation as banker when he enlisted with the 28th North West Battalion in Moose Jaw on October 24, 1914. Thomas was living in Broderick at the time. He served in France from September 17, 1915 until his death from severe gunshot wounds to his back and legs on June 8, 1916 at Courcelette. By that time, he had risen to the rank of Company Sergeant Major. He died at Casualty Station No. 17. He is commemorated at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery in Belgium. CHORNEYKO, Athanazie WWII Athanazie was born in Arran, Saskatchewan, on February 25, 1918, the son of Elias and Alexandra Chorneyko of Arran. He graduated grade 12 in 1936 at Arran School. He joined the Army in 1941 and was discharged at Brandon in November 1941. He enlisted in the Air Force, trained as a pilot and a Rear Gunner. He left Halifax in January 1943 for England and further training as Rear Gunner. Athanazie died on October 22, 1943 and is buried at Schoonselhof, Antwerp, Belgium.
