LEST WE FORGET 353 TUCKER, Bertram John WWI John Bertram Tucker, the eldest son of John and Martha Tucker in Devonshire, England, was born on November 3, 1893. He was working as a telleraccountant at the Union Bank of Canada in Bounty, Saskatchewan before he enlisted on September 21, 1914 at Valcartier with the Ammunition Column of the 1st Field Artillery Brigade. He was among the first men to enlist in Canada after the call for volunteers in August 1914. He was single and 20 years old at the time. In February 1915, he crossed to France and was present at the Battle of Ypres where the Germans used gas for the first time. On June 13, 1916, after repairing his signal wires four times under intense enemy fire, John Tucker was mortally wounded and died at a Casualty Station from gunshot wounds to both legs, his wrists and hands. For his service, he earned a Memorial Cross. He is commemorated at the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery in Belgium. VAUDNER, Wilson Woodrow WWII Wilson was born in 1915. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1943 and served during World War II. He trained in Canada as Flight Sergeant, Air Gunner. He was posted to Britain and following leave, joined the RAF Squadron, stationed in India. He was flying in a Liberator Aircraft #EW124 which failed to return. He was thirty years old. He has no known grave. His name in inscribed on Singapore War Memorial in Malaya. A small Saskatchewan lake north of Lloydminster, east of Cold Lake, Alberta, is named in his honour. He left behind his father and mother, Bill and Margaret Vaudner, and brothers Rancellor, Art and twin brother Wilfred from Assiniboia, SK. VAN STEINBURG, Gordon WWII & PEACETIME Gordon was born in Moosomin, Saskatchewan, in September 1920. He served as a Dispatcher in the Army during World War II. He farmed for a while but reenlisted in the Air Force in 1954 to 1970 during peacetime. He was an air-frame technician working in the salvage crew. He travelled to many places where the jets crashed to fix them or else bury them. He returned to Moosomin after he retired and worked in the Moosomin Care Home until he passed away very suddenly on March 4, 1978.
