LEST WE FORGET 351 SWERHUN, John WWII John was born in Calder, Saskatchewan, in October 1925. He enlisted in the Army during World War II and served in England and Holland. He received a Special Medal of thanks from the Government of Holland. John passed away in March 2008. TILLIE, George McDougall WWII George was born in Carmichael, Scotland, on December 27, 1918. He immigrated to Canada with his family in March 1927 to the family farm in the Mortlach district of Saskatchewan. George took his pretraining in Regina with the KORC and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps on June 18, 1941. After training in Canada, he was shipped overseas arriving in the United Kingdom on August 18, 1942. Upon arrival in the UK, George was attached to the 4th Canadian Armoured Division as a Driver Mechanic. George saw service in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Upon his discharge in January 1946, George returned to farming and bought the family farm in 1955. He worked on the farm and raised his family there before retiring in 1979. George was a great ‘tinkerer’ and was able to fix almost anything. A quiet man who didn’t say much with words but was still able to get his point across. George passed away on May 16, 2007 and is buried in the soldiers’ plot of Rosedale Cemetery in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. TATLER, Harold John Mason WWII Harold was born on April 24, 1917 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II on March 7, 1941. He took his basic training in Brandon. He finished his Service Flying training and obtained his Wings on December 5, 1941 at Yorkton. He remained in Canada between January 1941 and June 1944 as an RCAF Flying Instructor and Squadron Commander and reached the rank of Flight Lieutenant. He was sent overseas to the United Kingdom on August 3, 1944. Flying RAF Hurricanes and Spitfires, he served with the following fighter squadrons: #541, #41 and #51. He returned to Canada on August 12, 1945 and was discharged on September 21, 1945. Harold was awarded the Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the 1939-1945 War Medal. Harold passed away on January 15, 2009 in Saskatoon.
