LEST WE FORGET 349 Kenneth Earl Styles and Dorothy Florence May Treweek A Canadian Veteran and His War Bride Kenneth was born west of Penzance, Saskatchewan, in 1919. He enlisted with the Army in 1941 in Regina. Following his training, he headed for the United Kingdom, and then to France, Holland, Belgium, and Germany, where he served with the L of C Signals, Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. He returned to Canada and was discharged on November 27, 1945 in Regina. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal and War Medal 1939-1945. Dorothy was born in London, England, on January 18, 1923. She lived there until 1941 when her mother moved her family of six to Colchester hoping to escape the Blitz. Her father, in the Naval Reserve, died accidentally at work during a blackout in June 1940. Dorothy met Kenneth during a blackout. He escorted her home and she agreed to meet him again. They spent all their free time together in the winter and spring of 1942-1943. They were married on June 20, 1943 at All Saints Church in Colchester, Essex County, England. On their wedding day, they had their wedding meal off the top of an air raid shelter. Her mother had saved rations for the cake. It lost the top layer in a noisy air raid, but her mother stuck it on again and no one noticed. She left Southampton, England, on July 19, 1946 on the Queen Mary with daughter Patricia, aged two, and son Clifford, aged five months. They arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on July 23, 1946 and travelled to Craik, Saskatchewan. Another son, Wayne, was born later in Saskatchewan. Kenneth was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Craik Branch for 48 years. Dorothy passed away on July 16, 2006, and is buried in Craik, Saskatchewan with Ken who passed away on May 12, 2001.
