LEST WE FORGET 343 SMITH, John Dennis PEACETIME John was born in Wakaw, Saskatchewan, on February 21, 1928. In 1949, he served with the PA B Vols and in 1951 served with the Canadian Guards. He was Peacekeeper in Cyprus between 1964 and 1965. He was a proud Guardsman, retiring as Major in 1983. John passed away on October 15, 2003. SMITH, Philip John WWI Philip was born in Cardiff, Wales, on October 31, 1892. He served in France with the 46th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. He was wounded at Bourlon Wood on September 29, 1918, which left him as an amputee. He was mentioned in dispatches and received the Military Medal in 1919. In civilian life, he was an instructor at CATP Prince Albert. Philip passed away on October 15, 1954. SMITH, Philip Dean WWII Philip was born in Wakaw, Saskatchewan, on February 14, 1925. He served on HMCS Thunder with the Royal Canadian Navy. HMCS Thunder captured an armed trawler in the Bay of Viscay a few days before VE Day. It was the first minesweeper to capture a German warship and crew. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star/Atlantic Clasp, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, War Medal 1939-1945, Coronation Medal, Confederation Medal and the Canadian Forces’ Decoration and Clasp. Philip passed away on December 25, 1994.
