LEST WE FORGET 331 SAMPLE, Alexander Ernest WWI Ernest was born on April 19, 1988 in Flesherton, Grey County, Ontario. He enlisted in the Army on December 13, 1915 and was shipped overseas on June 29, 1916 to join the 46th Battalion; which was stationed in England and was later transferred to the 16th Battalion which was sent to the front on August 10, 1916. He served with his brother Chester in the Battle of the Somme. On November 3, 1916, Private Sample died of a gunshot wound. He is interred at the Contay British Cemetery. SANDOR, Frank Roy WWII Frank was born in Saskatchewan in July 1920. He was sent to Nanaimo, British Columbia, and to Jamaica to guard prisoners of war. He was gassed somehow and had poor lungs the rest of his life. When he got home, he had pneumonia. The doctor would come and see him, but it took a while for him to get on his feet and in better health. He started to farm in Moosomin. His parents went with him as they had to help him along when his health was poor. They eventually sold all and went to the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre in Toronto. He could barber, which was his trade, and he became patient barber there until his health worsened. The university took over the hospital while there, but Frank passed away of lung cancer on May 29, 1983 at the age of 63. His body was flown home to Regina, and he was buried in Riverside Graveyard in the Veterans’ Section. SANBY, Stewart R. WWI Stewart was born on March 1, 1886 in Southern England. He joined the 14th Hussars in January 1906 and served in England and India. He was transferred to the Machine Gun Corp and served all of the First World War. He was discharged in March 1920 after eleven years of service. He immigrated to Canada in 1926 to farm in the Abernethy area. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Abernethy Branch 26 for eighteen years. Stewart passed away in 1944.
